Portrait and Figure

Oil Paintings

2016 - Present

These paintings explore the quiet complexity of people within spaces—moments where figure and environment become inseparable. Sometimes the focus rests on a single presence, intimate and direct. Other times, multiple figures interact within a shared setting, creating a subtle narrative shaped by gesture, light, and atmosphere.

Each piece is built on a strong foundation of traditional realist painting—careful observation, thoughtful construction, and a deep attention to light, form, and proportion. These are the same time-tested principles passed down through generations of painters, and the same ones shared every day in the studio.

At the same time, there’s room for something more personal to emerge. Edges soften or sharpen with intention, color shifts beyond strict observation, and brushwork becomes a way to express energy, movement, and mood. The goal isn’t just to describe what is seen, but to evoke what it feels like to be there.

Interiors, exteriors, and imagined spaces all become stages where light plays across surfaces and figures find their place within it. Some scenes feel still and contemplative, others active and unfolding—but all are grounded in a balance between structure and spontaneity.

These works live in that space between tradition and expression—where careful observation meets instinct, and where each painting becomes both a study of the world and a reflection of experience.
